8 . Container and Contained

چکیده

A n advantage of believing that observations are the foundation of scientific method is that the conditions in which they are made can be stated and then produced. The simplicity of this has its appeal for the psychoanalyst: an analytic situation is presumed to exist and interpretations of the observations made in that situation are then reported. It is possible to believe that the analysis has a location in time and space: for example, the hours arranged for the sessions and the four walls of the consulting room; that at such times and in such a place the analyst can make observations that he cannot do if the domain has not these limitations, or if 'psychoanalytic observations' do not conform to the conventional view of an observation. If I pictorialize the statement 'the conventional view of an observation' to be a container, like a sphere, and the 'psychoanalytic observation' as something that cannot be contained within it, I have a model that will do very well not only for the 'conventional view,' to represent m y feelings about a 'psychoanalytic situation,* but also for the 'psychoanalysis' that it cannot contain. It will also serve as a model for m y feelings about certain patients: I cannot observe Mr. X because he will not remain 'inside' the analytic situation or even 'within' Mr. X himself. I have found theories of acting-out enlightening, but not enlightening enough; none of the theories known to m e 'contains' the 'facts' by which I seek to be enlightened. M y 'facts' gird against the framework of definition and theory that I seek to erect around them. The patient w h o is acting out cannot be 'contained' within existing formulations. This is a characteristic of the mental domain: it cannot be contained within the framework of psychoanalytic theory. Is this a sign of defective theory, or a sign that psychoanalysts do not understand that psychoanalysis cannot be contained permanently within the definitions they use? It would be a valid observation to say that psychoanalysis cannot 'contain' the mental domain because it is not a 'container' but a 'probe'; the formulation that I have tried to further by using the symbols 9 and i minimizes this difficulty by leaving 9 and 6 as unknowns whose value is to be determined. I would pursue this train of thought further by discussing something more practical and particular. It is a matter where action1 seems to be called for, namely, the institutionalization of psychoanalysis comprising publication, selection, training, and qualification.

Evaluating impact of truck announcements on container stacking efficiency

Container stacking rules are an important factor in container terminal efficiency. We build on prior research and use a discrete-event simulation model to evaluate the impact of a truck announcement system on the performance of online container stacking rules. The information that is contained in the announcement, i.e., the expected departure time for an import container, can be used to schedul...

What is the container/contained when there are ghosts in the nursery?: Joining Bion and Fraiberg in dyadic interventions with mother and infant.

"Ghosts in the nursery." "Visitors from the unremembered past." Fraiberg, Adelson, and Shapiro's (1975) words convey the relational "intruders" that they perceived while working with mothers and infants. A mother's unresolved past is a driving force within the treatment of mother-infant dyads. Working with these families, the therapist strives to process and metabolize the distress of the dyad ...

Cost Function Modelling for Semi-automated SC, RTG and Automated and Semi-automated RMG Container Yard Operating Systems

This study analyses the concept of cost functions for semi-automated Straddle Carrier (SC), Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) and automated Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) container yard operating cranes. It develops a generic cost based model for a pair-wise comparison, analysis and evaluation of economic efficiency and effectiveness of container yard equipment to be used for decision-making by terminal pla...
